It's sad to edit out an entire group of scenes originating from one shooting location. Makes me think what was the point of standing in that spot for 10 minutes filming things I wouldn't keep. I could have sat down and stored my energy for something really worth filming.

When I'm editing, it seems contradictory that I am sometimes pleased by badly filmed scenes, as it feels productive to delete them. It feels concentrated and focused to cut an hour of film down to five minutes. But if that entire hour of film is high-quality footage, then cutting it down is a hard process.

Yellow Wind in Seoul

"Yellow Wind" refers to the wind which comes from China bearing sand of the Gobi desert mixed with toxic particles. Every year around March, this wind blankets much of South Korea and parts of Japan, along with China's own cities, like Beijing. Traces of the wind have been known to reach the west coast of North America. This film was shot from an apartment window in Seoul.

Newcomer wins first Kami

DoAn Forest with Kami

The Kamloops Art Gallery is pleased to announce the winner of the
first Kami Short Video Competition. DoAn Forest, a newcomer to
Kamloops, won the competition for the best short video about "the
place where I live." After moving here from Korea in February 2007 and
learning about the Kami competition, Forest raced to complete a video
about his new hometown. His video was chosen as the best by the
audience attending the screening competition, and Forest took home the
coveted Kami People's Choice award. The video can be seen at

The screening competition, held on Sunday, March 18, 2007, featured
six 5-minute videos by participants from Kamloops and the
Thompson-Nicola Regional District. Their interpretations of the theme
"the place where I live" varied from cowboy scenes to alien
perspectives. Fueled by hot popcorn and cold drinks, audience members
made their difficult decision after viewing all six videos.

Admission fee to the screening was a donation for the Kamloops Food
Bank. The Gallery thanks the audience for contributing 26 items of
food at this small but successful event. The Gallery also extends
thanks to the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce for permission to use the
Kami mascot image on the competition trophy.

Funky Forest

Watched Funky Forest.
One of the most entertaining and deep movies I've ever seen. Like a way more wacked out version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Also, based on the four years I've lived in Japan, this movie says far more about life in Japan than a lot of less zany movies that come from Japan.

JChap: Tokyo Foreigner

I stumbled across this guy Jchap's videos today, while searching through videos on vimeo.com ...

Jchap has some great Japan videos. It looks like he's arrived in Japan recently, and his videos have all that fresh, adrenaline-pumping energy that a lot of "foreigners" experience when they're new to Tokyo. Actually, most newcomers to Tokyo don't do very interesting work, cause they all notice pretty much the same things (neon, crazy fashion, crowds, signs with English mistakes, strange foods). But Jchap pulls it off really well though, cause he's just got charisma and knows how to select the truly funny and cool stuff. With any luck, he'll be on Japanese TV.

Filming in Tokyo and Japan is different than in most other places. I find, when filming in Canadian streets, there's always some person who waves to the camera. In Korea, people get curious or visibly uncomfortable about being filmed. But people in Japan pretty much ignore the camera ... and even ignore the "foreigner"'s crazy actions (unless they cross some line of acceptability).

I'll feature two of my favorite videos of Jchaps here that I really like (and then put links to a few more good videos below.

Kamloops New Arrival

I made this in late February 2007, three weeks after beginning life in Kamloops, BC, Canada. The video has been submitted into a video contest at the Kamloops Art Gallery with the theme, "The Place Where I Live."

UPDATE: Happily, I ended up winning the contest that I submitted this video to (Mar. 18th, 2007). I also met some really good people at the event, including a few fine arts professors at the local university and various art gallery staff. A very good experience. Perhaps, it's the first thing I've ever won since I won a drawing contest at a Cornwall seaside hotel resort when I was eight years old. I love the handmade, one-of-a-kind wall-plaque I got as a prize.

I made this video for a video contest that had "Future" as its loose theme. I contemplated the future, and saw RED. This is the result. (On a technical note, the video was made using Apple's Motion software. I used all the tricks I've recently learned.)
